The choir has been entertaining the Cayman Islands for over 30 years and was recognised in 2002 for their contribution to culture and performing arts with the Radley Gourzong Award. Under the guidance of Sue Horrocks, the musical repertoire has been expanded to include music from the Caribbean and North America as well as traditional choral classics. Recent successes include their outstanding Cayman Arts Festival Finale performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with Wayne Marshall, Backbeat Percussion and the Micallef – Inanga Piano Duo. The standard is high and they are regularly in demand for performances, especially around Christmas. The choir meets every Monday at Cayman Prep School Hall, Smith Road at 7.30pm (no audition required).

The Cayman National Orchestra has a very wide musical repertoire (from Harry Potter to Handel) and comprises over 30 musicians, a number of whom are music graduates and experienced performers. Their standard is very high and they often perform with the National Choir.
The orchestra rehearses every Wednesday at Cayman Prep School Hall, Smith Road from 7.30–9pm (breaks in school holidays). Contact Sue Horrocks to find out if there are any instrumental vacancies. Additional string players (minimum grade 5) always welcome.

The I.L.C. meets socially for a coffee morning at 9.30am on the 1st Thursday of each month and for lunch at 12 noon on the 3rd Thursday of each month from September to June. The annual registration fee is CI$25 and you must be over 18. More than 20 different nationalities are represented amongst the 200-strong membership. The club also organises various monthly activities like bridge, cookery classes, flower arranging, golf, dance, art, kayaking, photography, pottery, sewing, self-defence, and yoga. It is a fabulous forum to meet other women and form friendships. As the club mostly meets and holds activities during the day, many of its members do not work outside the home.

This is a non-profit organisation associated with the International Wine and Food Society in London. Functions, which are themed, are held about once every six weeks, except over the summer. The society offers the opportunity to learn how to grow and look after both native and exotic hybrid orchids. They are involved in the rescue of endangered orchids and the general conservation and propagation of orchids. Their annual orchid show is held in February or March. They have an information library, equipment-lending programme for home care, free counselling service and education outreach to schools programmes. They have a Quit Smoking Programme and a Financial Assistance Programme which is run through donations. Membership is CI$25 for singles and $40 for a family per year and includes a newsletter every two months. They are always looking for volunteers.

Cayman Hospice Care is a non-profit organisation providing free, high quality palliative care to people with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.
Bereavement counselling and support is provided. Cayman Hospice Care is funded largely from voluntary donations. Trained volunteers offer support and assistance to patients and to the specialist nurses which Hospice Care employs.

The NCVO is one of the oldest charities on the Island, serving the community for over 30 years. The NCVO oversees the following: The Jack and Jill Nursery & Early Learning Centre, Miss Nadine’s Pre-school, the Nadine Andreas Residential Foster Home, the NCVO Caring Cousin Welfare Scheme, the John R Gray Memorial Grant and the Pink Ladies Volunteer Corps.

This is an organisation started by the NCVO in 1980, which has approximately 85 members. Volunteers usually help out in the region of three hours a week and assist in the following places: The Pines Retirement Home, George Town Hospital, Lighthouse School, Craft Group, Pink Hibiscus Coffee Shop, Christmas cards and the NCVO ‘New To You’ Bargain Shop.

The community can play a big role in helping offenders to be responsible citizens. This is encompassed in their vision statement, “We will be instrumental in steering them towards being responsible citizens with the help of their families and the community.” Volunteers and organisations have an important part to play in the provision of prison-based programmes and assisting the prisoners’ integration back into society. They have since engaged the community in a number of projects. Inmates who are assessed to be suitable will be given the chance to participate in these projects.
