FAMILY OUTINGS

Cayman is not short of activities to keep the family and little ones busy and entertained. The real question will be finding the time to do it all. One of our all-time favourite outings is a North Sound boat trip with one of the local Caymanian charter boat companies: Charter Boat Headquarters (Tel: (345) 945 4340) or Captain Marvin’s Water Sports (Tel: (345) 945 4590) organises trips using local operators for either full or half day outings. (A full-day trip includes lunch and conch diving when in season.) The stops include Stingray City, the Sandbar, Coral Gardens, Barrier Reef and Rum Point or Kaibo for lunch. The cost for local residents is US$35 for a half-day, and US$65 for a full-day. Both are really good value—just pack the sunscreen.

If you have little thrill seekers in the family you may enjoy a trip to Stingray City and then continue on to Rum Point by jet ski: Action Watersports (Tel: (345) 548 3147) offers two-hour tours on three-man Sea Doo watercraft for US$60-$105 per person. Another sea based activity that is fun for the whole family is mangrove kayak tours. The evening tours in a bioluminescent bay are a particular highlight and magnificent. Cayman Kayaks explore the mangroves of the North Sound with a short kayak ride from Rum Point. The cost is US$25-$45 per person, and is ideal for children over six and adults. Cayman Sea Elements (Tel: (345) 916 0303 or caymansea@gmail.com) offers mangrove boat tours which show the birds, seahorses, anemones and even iguanas climbing through the mangroves. This tour is suitable for families and people of all ages. The cost is CI$25 for non-National Trust members. Cayman Luxury Charters offers half and full day private yacht charters including snorkelling, wave-runner, water-skiing and wakeboarding, as well as light snacks and soft drinks. For more information call (345) 938 2525. For a laugh you could take a banana ride with Red Sail Sports. Finally, you could take the entire family for a swim with the dolphins at either Dolphin Cove or Dolphin Discovery.

For an amazing view of the North Sound and Seven Mile Beach or the whole Island by air you can take a 20 or 50 minute helicopter tour with Cayman Islands Helicopters (Tel: (345) 943 4354). Another great way to see beautiful Seven Mile Beach from the air is to take a tandem parasailing ride with Parasailing Professionals (Tel: (345) 916 2953).

Rainy day options include Atlantis Submarine rides, or 10-pin bowling at the King’s Sports Centre, or for very young children (12 months to 5 years), playing in the indoor maze at Smyles or letting off steam at one of the Toddler’s Play Days at Motions Unlimited.

Land based activities for the whole family are almost endless! You could explore the beach, build sandcastles off Seven Mile Beach or at Rum Point. The Cayman Turtle Farm (formally Boatswain’s Beach) in West Bay is interesting, educational and there are plenty of interactive activities. Once you have had your fill of turtles and other local wildlife, you could wander across the road for lunch at the Cracked Conch or Macabuca Tiki Bar followed by an afternoon checking out the amazing cars in the Cayman Motor Museum (Tel: (345) 947 7741) just down the road.

Another really nice thing to do is go early on a Saturday morning to the Farmers’ Market at the Grounds in Lower Valley (open Saturdays from 6.30am to 1pm) where parents can shop for local produce and crafts and sample Caymanian dishes while the kids explore the interesting stands. While you are in that area a trip to the Botanic Park is an absorbing and renewing outing for the whole family. Large blue lguanas lounge on the grass soaking up the sun while there are butterflies, birds, turtles, agouties, reptiles and a huge array of native and exotic plants and trees to see and wander among. You could also stop in at the Mission House in Bodden Town (open Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday from 9am-5.30pm), Pedro St. James Castle or the National Museum for a historical trip back in time.

Bring the family to enjoy art activities at the National Gallery on the second to last Saturday of each month. Coined “Family Fun Day”, this drop-in art class takes place between 11am-2pm for all ages. Email education.ng@candw.ky for more info.

There are parks to explore (like Dart Park on South Church Street) and Camana Bay is always good value; you can walk and explore, get a cappuccino, have lunch, catch a movie and young children will love playing in the fountains. (Bring a towel!) Then, there is the observatory to climb for a great panoramic view and Books & Books has a wonderful children’s room full of books, puzzles and toys all within reach. For more options and details read further in this chapter.

PUBLIC PLAYGROUNDS & PARKS

Agricultural Pavilion Grounds (Lower Valley)
This large government-owned facility offers a truly unique Caymanian experience. On Saturday mornings, from 6.30am-1pm, you can shop for fruit, vegetables, organic products and local delicacies at the Market at the Grounds. Once a year on Ash Wednesday, the Agricultural Fair showcases the best that Cayman has to offer in the way of local produce, livestock and crafts. (This is one of the Island’s largest family events, so be certain to leave the house early to beat the traffic!) For more information, you can visit www.thegroundscayman.ky or email: cias@candw.ky or call (345) 947 3696.

Airport Park (George Town)
Kids and parents alike will get a kick out of watching aeroplanes from this front-row vantage point that is adjacent to the Owen Roberts International Airport runway and just opposite the Foster’s Food Fair supermarket. This park is full of see-saws and slides for the kids, and there are even restroom facilities. The only disadvantage is a lack of shade, so it’s best to take children on cloudy days, or very early or late in the day.

Botanic Park (Frank Sound)
The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is a wonderful area for nature walks and for viewing the endangered blue iguana. There is an old Cayman cottage with an outdoor cooking ‘caboose’ and a garden full of medicinal herbs which any inquisitive  child will be fascinated by. For more information, check the Activities for Adults chapter.

Dart Family Park (South Sound)
A gift from the Dart Foundation to the Cayman Islands; this seafront oasis in South Sound is just a short drive from the harbour along South Church Street, just past Sunset House. Set amidst shady, landscaped gardens are slides, climbing frames, an amphitheatre, gazebos and restroom facilities. There are also cabanas which can also be booked free of charge for children’s parties by calling (345) 946 8250. The park is open from sunrise to sunset daily and also houses the offices of the National Trust which provides information and displays about Cayman flora and fauna.

Mastic Reserve & Trail (North Side)
Recently expanded through the National Trust for the Cayman Islands, The Mastic Reserve was originally founded in 1992 with 145 acres donated for nature conservation. The reserve now protects 717 acres of lowland semi-deciduous forest, wetlands, core habitat for many of the Island’s unique animals, birds and plants. The area is traversed by the historic Mastic Trail, which affords excellent opportunities for children to become acquainted with Cayman’s wildlife. It can be accessed free of charge and is open 365 days per year, although during the rainy season the southern end of the trail becomes tough to traverse. A new 600 foot boardwalk has been installed through a section of the trail prone to flooding. The National Trust also hosts regularly scheduled interpretive walks. For more information call (345) 749 1121 or info@nationaltrust.org.ky.

Public Beach (West Bay Road)
Along with being one of the most beautiful stretches of Seven Mile Beach, Public Beach has cabanas, restroom facilities, freshwater showers, slides, swings and a climbing frame that are ideal for young children. There are plans afoot for the Dart Foundation to expand and enhance Public Beach. So watch this space!

Public Beach (West Bay)
Just at the start of West Bay, this small public beach has beautiful sand, cabanas for shade and restroom facilities. On Friday evenings grab a blanket with the kids, sit on the beach, and enjoy Chef John’s Friday Fish Fry and BBQ while watching the sunset together. Bring $15 cash for a delicious plate of food (one plate of food is large enough for a couple or for two children to share).

Scholars Park (West Bay)
A popular site for children’s parties, this landscaped park is located down Stadium Drive (West Bay) and features a variety of play equipment, all set in a huge sandpit. Along with shady cabanas and barbecue pits, there are also restroom facilities and sizeable grassy areas for the little ones to let off steam! A cabana can be reserved for free by calling the Recreation, Parks and Cemeteries Unit on (345) 946 8250.
