In this section we describe in detail activities for children in the Cayman Islands. Written by a local Cayman parents it offers advice on how to entertain your kids and help them make friends when you relocate to the Cayman Islands. We give details on cultural organisations, sports associations, kids sporting events, summer camps, parks and playgroups and interesting places and outings to take children on, including the Butterfly Farm, Turtle Farm, the beach and submarine rides.
Playgrounds & Parks
Scholars Park (West Bay)
This landscaped park is located down Stadium Drive (WB) and features a variety of climbing frames, swings, rope ladders and slides all set in a huge sand pit. In addition to shady cabanas and barbecue pits, there are also toilet facilities and sizeable grassy areas for the little ones to let off steam! Once again, this is a popular site for children’s parties. A cabana can be reserved for kiddies’ parties for the nominal sum of CI$10 by calling the Recreation, Parks and Cemeteries Unit on (345) 946 8250.
Airport Park
This park has been newly refurbished, and if your kids get a kick out of watching aeroplanes taking off and landing then you could not find a better vantage point. Located opposite the Foster’s Food Fair supermarket, this park has as many see-saws and slides as any child could want. One of the best kept secrets is the turtle pond behind the park, which can be equally exciting. A clever parent will buy turtle food from Petique (Pasadora Place) for extra fun. The whole area is fenced, but food can be thrown through the fence quite easily.
South Sound Park
A gift from the Dart Foundation to the Cayman Islands, this is a shady oasis in South Sound. It is a short drive from the harbour along South Church Street, just past Sunset House. Set amidst landscaped gardens are slides, climbing frames, an amphitheatre and gazebos – all right next to the ironshore and the seafront. The cabanas at this park can also be booked for CI$10 for children’s parties by calling (345) 946 8250. The park is open from 9am to 9pm 7 days a week.
Watler’s Road Park
At the intersection of Eastern Avenue and West Bay Road, there is this recently rejuvenated park with new playground equipment and picnic facilities. The park is open 9am to 7pm.
Black Pearl Skate Park
Located behind Grand Harbour Shopping Centre in Red Bay, this skate park has 62,000 sq. ft. of beginner, intermediate and expert flow and street courses. Minimum age is 6. Open 10am to 7pm (sunset) on weekdays and Saturday and Sunday 12 noon to 7pm. This park has instructors on hand to give lessons and all equipment needed (including safety equipment) is available to rent (CI$8 for pads and CI$15 for a board). Entrance fees are: CI$20 a day, CI$12 for half day or CI$8 per hour. It costs CI$40 for a weekly pass and CI$80 for a monthly pass. Annual membership is also available for CI$365. Call (345) 947 4161 for more information.
Black Pearl Surf Park
This is a fresh water, standing wave surf park located behind Grand Harbour Shopping Centre next door to the skate park. Rental boards are included in session prices and beginner lessons are available. The park is open 10am to 6pm and a minimum of 6 people are needed to operate the wave. The fees are CI$30 for a half hour per person for a minimum of 4 people or CI$60 for 1 hour per person for a minimum of 5 people. Parents and friends can sit in the restaurant opposite, which overlooks both parks, and watch their kids/friends while they play. Call (345) 947 4161 for more information. Birthday packages are also available.
Smyles
Situated in the Largatos Building just off the Lawrence Blvd, Smyles is every child’s dream; a huge indoor playground featuring a colourful maze of climbing apparatus, tunnels, slides, a ball pit and a soft creative play area for younger children. Open seven days a week from Monday to Thursday 9am to 6pm; Friday and Saturday 9am to 10pm, and Sunday 11am to 6pm. Entry for children aged 6 months to less than 2 years is CI$3.50 and from 2 to 12 years is CI$6 with a parent. There is also the option to drop your child off in the care of the staff, which costs CI$10 for the first hour, then CI$6 per hour thereafter and is a popular option if you want to attend World Gym. It is advisable to call ahead as the play area can be closed for private birthday parties from time to time. For more information call (345) 946 5800.

There are various leagues, teams, clubs and rallies. Contact the Cayman Islands Netball Association through Lucille Seymour on (345) 916 4842 or Norma Ferryman on (345) 946 7566.
Rock Climbing
Kids over 4 years of age and teens can go indoor rock climbing at the King’s Sport Centre (Tel: (345) 946 5464) for CI$5 an hour, but it is an unsupervised activity, so an accompanying adult may be necessary. In-school, after-school and weekend lessons run throughout the year for beginner, intermediate, and advanced sailors. Youth racing runs on Saturday mornings at 9am. The Club also hosts all-day camps during school breaks and summer programmes during July and August. Young sailors can join the racing team and represent Cayman at international regattas. For more information email admin@sailing.ky.
Scuba Diving
Children as young as 10 years old can become PADI certified. For those who are younger or would just like to get a taste of what it feels like to breathe underwater with scuba gear on they can try the Bubblemaker. Children have to be at least 8 years old and classes are held in a swimming pool with a qualified instructor. Red Sail Sports offer these lessons. For children ages 5 to 8 years there is S.A.S.Y (Supplied Air Snorkelling for Youth). This is for surface snorkelling only but it does allow them to feel what it might be like to use dive gear. This facility is available at Divetech at Cobalt Coast Resort in West Bay. Try divetech@candw.ky.
Skating
Children and teenagers can both skateboard and rollerskate on-Island. Cayman is on the map of all skateboard gurus all over the world due to the massive Black Pearl Skate Park. Kids (minimum age is 6) can skate until dusk, but must wear knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet, which can be rented. See more information under Playgrounds and Parks above. You will need to ask around but a police constable (Steve Myers) has built a half-pipe in his backyard in West Bay and kids of all ages go there for practising. King’s Sport Centre is very popular for rollerskating on Saturdays.
Squash
The Squash Club has a thriving and expanding junior section for boys and girls from beginners through to top team players. Junior coaching (for kids 7 and up) is held each Saturday from 1pm to 2pm for beginners and 2pm to 3pm for intermediate and advanced players and the cost is CI$60 for the term. Contact Dean Watson (345) 949 9469 (club) or (345) 925 7772 (cell) for details.
Swimming
Living on an island and with so much water around us, it is essential that every child becomes a competent and confident swimmer. There are various places that can teach your child to swim. Fitness Connection is a small, friendly, family fitness and aquatic centre located in the heart of South Sound. They have been teaching people to swim for many years now. Swimming lessons (babies as young as 3 months old are welcome!) are private or held in small groups. Call Laura on (345) 949 8485, email fitcon@candw.ky.
Stingray Swim Club meets at the Lions Aquatic Centre, a 25 metre pool situated on Aspiration Drive near the Community College, they run swim programmes and training sessions managed by Head Coach Dominic Ross for approximately 300 children aged 3 to 17 years. Parents should register their child at the beginning of term but be aware that spaces are limited and are highly sought-after, so register early. Many young swimmers from this programme go on to compete in regional and international swim meets such as the CARIFTA Games, and local teams have gained an excellent reputation in the competitive swimming arena. Call (345) 949 8105. Email: cayman.swimming@gmail.com for questions related to competitive swimming or swimskl@candw.ky for swimming lesson-related information. There are other swimming instructors on-Island, many of whom work with small groups or offer individual tuition to suit your schedule and location. Try Rose Lewis on (345) 916 7273 or Cayman Aquatics on (345) 916 6722. As with most things in Cayman, to use a local term, the ‘Marl Road’ is often the best way to pick up recommendations, so ask around to find a programme that best suits the needs of your child.
Tennis
The Cayman Islands Tennis Club offers a number of membership options (see the Activities for Adults chapter) and professional coaches offer lessons for all ages. Call Rob Seward on (345) 949 9464 to find out about their Junior Summer Tennis Camp and about their after school programmes (ages 5 and up).

Children are split into two age groups: 7 to 10 and 11 to 14. Triathlon clubs have been started at a few schools. Two major kids’ events are held in March and November every year, with warm up mini events held the preceding three weeks. Watch the local press for notice of these events.
