EXPLORING CAYMAN'S ATTRACTIONS

Pedro St. James Castle
The Castle is the oldest known stone dwelling in the Cayman Islands; built in 1780 by slaves brought from Jamaica, as the great house for mariner, plantation owner and early English settler William Eden. In the 1990s, the Government purchased the property and carried out a CI$7.5 million renovation, bringing the home and grounds back to their former glory. Set over 7.65 acres, the site encompasses a three-storey, early 18th century great house and its accompanying out-buildings, palm-lined walkways, a manicured great lawn and spectacular views of the sea. This is one of the most beautiful locations in Cayman, and a state-of-the-art multimedia theatre and visitors centre also help place the site into historical perspective. Pedro St. James is located in the Savannah area of Grand Cayman and is open 9am-5pm daily. The multi-media show starts on the hour from 10am-4pm. Admission is CI$8 for adults and free for children under 12, accompanied by an adult. There is also a gift shop on the premises. For information call (345) 947 3329 or email Debbie Bodden at debbie@hotmail.com.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park
This 65-acre site is made up of woodland walking trails, floral colour gardens, an undisturbed lake and wetland for wildlife, a heritage garden, visitor’s centre, orchid propagation unit and a plant nursery. In the park you will see butterflies, birds, turtles, agouties, reptiles and a huge array of native and exotic plants and trees. There is now a newly developed Orchid Boardwalk that is home to all the Island’s rescued local orchids (about 1,000 and counting) as well as many regional orchid species. Also, new to the Botanic Park is a Palm Walk which runs through a 2-acre site of native woodland. The hope is to establish a collection of at least 100 species when it is fully completed. The park also houses the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme, which has made great strides in protecting and captive-breeding the Grand Cayman blue iguana, a highly endangered species found nowhere else on earth. Located on Frank Sound Road in the district of North Side, the Botanic Park is approximately a 30–40 minute drive from George Town. It opens daily at 9am and closes at 4.30pm. Admission ends one hour before closing time. Entrance to the Park is CI$8 for adults and free for children under 12. For park information call (345) 947 9462 or visit www.botanic-park.ky. Other services include two golf carts which are available for the elderly and handicapped. Please email: manager@botanic-park.ky prior to your visit to arrange to use one of them. A retail nursery is on-site selling locally grown plants and the site rents for weddings and small events.

Hell
This site consists of an area of sharp spires of calcareous rock approximately one million years old, blackened by fungus over time and named Hell. There is even a post office where you can purchase a postcard and have it mailed with a Hell postmark to prove to your friends you have been to Hell and back! There are also souvenir shops to buy t-shirts, bumper stickers and memorabilia, all with the Hell motif.

Stingray City & The Sandbar
Over the years, Stingray City (written up in National Geographic as well as many other international magazines) has become a major attraction for Island visitors. There are actually two sites: Stingray City where divers swim in 20-foot deep water with stingrays, and the Sandbar where people can walk among rays in waist deep water. It is a wonderful experience to stand in shallow water while nearly four feet (in diameter) stingrays brush against your arms and legs with their soft underbellies begging for their favourite food, squid, which you feed them by hand.

As long as you do not lift them out of the water, step on them (i.e., watch where you tread and please note that wearing water shoes is banned) and treat them with respect, the rays are completely safe. Contact local dive operators for information on trips. Please note that on very rough and windy days the sandbar is sometimes closed by the Marine Police. If you visit the sandbar shortly after it has been reopened, you will find dozens of very hungry stingrays descending on you and it can be quite intimidating!

Cayman Turtle Farm
Since 1980, the Cayman Turtle Farm (formerly Boatswain’s Beach) has released more than 31,000 sea turtles back into the sea to help replenish Cayman’s wild population. The farm is home to more than 8,000 loggerhead and green sea turtles, ranging in size from six ounces to 600 pounds each. The reproduction rate of the turtles is currently at an all-time low and an international research project is being undertaken to find out why. As a result and until further notice, the annual turtle release in November has been suspended.

The CaymanTurtle Farm is a modern-day reminder of Cayman’s history. When Christopher Columbus first discovered the Islands in 1503, he named them “Las Tortugas”, meaning “The Turtles.” According to legend, there were so many turtles that the Islands looked like they were covered with rocks. (For more information see the Activities for Kids section)

Beaches
There are numerous wonderful beaches on Grand Cayman. The most famous is Seven Mile Beach, which runs the length of the western side of the Island north of George Town. Popular spots along this span include: Governor’s Beach, located adjacent to the Governor’s House (next door to the Westin); Public Beach, just north of Harbour Heights apartments on Seven Mile Beach, which has colourful, painted cabanas for shade, public restrooms and a children’s play area. A little further north there is Cemetery Beach, which is shaded by a number of large seagrape and casuarina trees. At Cemetery Beach, the snorkelling is only a five-minute swim off-shore and is some of the best on Seven Mile Beach.

Many districts also have public beaches, including West Bay, Spotts, Bodden Town, East End and North Side. Rum Point in North Side is ideally suited to families and has shallow water, a restaurant, bar, plenty of sun loungers, hammocks and shade trees. A particular favourite of the editor’s is Spotts Beach – it can be quite deserted, and though the walk along the beach is relatively short, it is beautiful.

On the other side of George Town, just beyond the Grand Old House restaurant is Smith’s Cove. This is a small public beach with lots of shade, picnic benches and great snorkelling. It is also a lovely place to watch the sunset.

Please note that there are no private beaches in Cayman and all beaches are public up to the high-water mark. If you want to put your towel on a beach in front of a hotel or condominium complex you are more than welcome to do so as long as you stay near the high-water mark and do not use one of their lounge chairs. There are some places that welcome residents, especially on weekends and do not mind you using their beach chairs. Three that come to mind are Royal Palms on Seven Mile Beach, Kaibo and Rum Point in North Side. (There are also no nude beaches on Grand Cayman, and topless European-style sunbathing is illegal. So it is best to keep covered up, especially with proper sunscreen!)

Mastic Reserve & Trail
The Mastic Trail was originally founded in 1992 when 145 acres were donated for nature conservation. Recently expanded through the National Trust for the Cayman Islands, the reserve now protects 717 acres of lowland semi-deciduous forest, wetlands and core habitat for many of the island’s unique animals, birds and plants. The area is traversed by the historic Mastic Trail, which affords excellent opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to become acquainted with Cayman’s wildlife. It can be accessed free of charge and is open 365 days per year, although the rainy season may make the southern end of the trail tough to traverse. A new 600 foot boardwalk has been installed through a section of the trail prone to flooding. The National Trust also hosts regularly scheduled interpretive walks. For more information call (345) 749 1121 or email: info@nationaltrust.org.ky.

Helicopter Rides
A great way to explore the Island, get a feel for its size and better orient yourself is to take a helicopter ride with Cayman Islands Helicopters (Tel: (345) 943 4354). They also offer a package deal for CI$748 for two people, which includes limo service, a helicopter flight and dinner for two at Ristorante Pappagallo (wine is not included). You can extend your party to six people for an additional CI$76 per person. For information contact Nathalie Legras on (345) 926 6967. The new landing pad is located downtown George Town between Burger King and the Island Glassblowing Studio.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

MUSEUMS
Cayman Islands National Museum
The National Museum, located in the Old Courts building overlooking George Town harbour, suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Ivan and was closed for repairs until September 2009. Now reopened, the museum is still a work in progress, having had to start virtually from scratch.

The museum is located in the oldest public building in the whole of Cayman. The self-guided tour starts off in the Old Gaol, where archaeologists have recently uncovered graffiti on the walls dating back hundreds of years. This discovery, currently being analyzed by experts, has further elevated the building’s historic significance. A screening room in the old cistern shows a short film on the history of Cayman. The exhibits are largely geared towards children, with many interactive and audio visual exhibits that showcase the natural and cultural history of the islands. There are cross sections of mangroves and coral reefs, a mock submarine which allows you to view the marine life at varying depths and displays that give visitors an idea of what the judicial court and  a typical home would have looked like. There is also a children’s gallery where young ones can make sculptures and art, and changing exhibits display local art, sculpture and jewellery.

The museum opens with the traditional blowing of the conch horn at 9am Monday to Saturday, and closes at 5pm weekdays and 1pm on Saturdays. Admission is CI$7 for adults, CI$5 for children. For more information visit www.museum.ky or call (345) 949 8368.

Cayman Motor Museum
Located next to the Cayman Turtle Farm in West Bay, the Cayman Motor Museum showcases local businessman Andreas Ugland’s collection of rare and classic automobiles and motorbikes brought to Cayman from all around the globe. Among the 80 or so cars and bikes on show, is the original Batmobile from the 1960s television show, an 1886 Benz (the first car ever produced), a 1905 Cadillac (the same make and model as the first automobile driven on Cayman), plus numerous Ferraris, Maserattis and Jaguars. Tempting though it may be, children are not permitted to get behind the wheel of the vehicles. Opening hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and entry costs US$15 for adults, US$7.50 for children under 12 and free for children under 5. Special resident rates of US$10 for adults and US$5 for children are offered on Saturdays. Call (345) 947 7741 or www.caymanmotormuseum.com.

The Mission House
Located at 63 Gun Square in Bodden Town, this historic site includes a traditional Caymanian home situated on a mixed area of dry and wetland frequented by a variety of local wildlife. This site is known to have been utilised in the 1700s by early settlers due to its abundant waterfowl and supply of fresh water. Glass and ceramics found on site from this time period are on display. The house rose to prominence in the 1800s and became known as the Mission House to early missionaries, teachers and families who lived in it and contributed to establishing the Presbyterian ministry and school in Bodden Town. For information call (345) 749 1132 or email: mission@nationaltrust.org.ky.

Paddle Boarding
Paddle boarding has been gaining popularity in Cayman in recent years. It is easy to learn – most people get the hang of it in about 30 minutes – and an ideal way to cruise the calm waters off Seven Mile Beach. Those looking for more of a challenge may want to take part in paddle board races or try surfing small waves on their boards.

Paddle boards can be rented from Red Sail Sports at the Westin and residents can secure a 50% discount off regular rates by booking in advance. White Sand Watersports in East End and The Kitehouse at Kaibo also rent paddle boards.

(See the Boating chapter for a list of operators and Cayman boating tours and information)

Surfing
Although not a big wave destination, it is possible to find some decent surf on Cayman, as a few locals who have been surfing here for years will tell you. Through the winter months from December to March when the northwesters blow through, some good swells are generated off Seven Mile Beach, making it a surfer’s paradise. The spots in front of Caribbean Club and Luca restaurant are ideal for beginners, with a safe sandy bottom and easy access to/from the sea. From June to November, the best surf is usually found at the South Sound Community Centre and Mariners Cove. Beginners would be well advised to avoid this location however, as the coral and sea urchins on the bottom can prove hazardous to less-skilled surfers. Surfboards can be rented from Divers Down at Treasure Island, or purchased at Divers Supply, Divers World or Sports Supply.

Die-hard surfers and beginners wanting to start out in more controlled conditions can always find a good wave at the Black Pearl Surf Park in Grand Harbour, where a Waveloch Surf Machine generates a standing wave up to 11-foot high, within the confines of a fresh-water pool. The pool can be booked for groups by the hour, which includes instruction, or on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7.30 pm, anyone can jump in and have a go for CI$20 per head. For information call (345) 947 4161.

Submarine Rides
Atlantis Submarines (Tel: (345) 949 7700) brings the captivating world of underwater exploration to everyone aged four and up aboard the state-of-the-art, air conditioned Atlantis Submarine, which dives to depths of up to 100 feet. Residents are eligible for a significant discount on the presentation of ID such as a Cayman Islands drivers licence or a passport with a work permit stamp.

At night Atlantis Submarines does a submarine night dive which is pretty unique in showing the underwater ‘night show’ of Cayman. At night the submarine’s lights attract nocturnal predatory fish which follow the sub and scour the reef for unwary daytime fish asleep in crevasses of the coral and worms lurking in the sand. The lights also show corals with their polyps open (reflecting a kaleidoscope of colors not seen during the daytime) and sponges on the reef which reflect a full spectrum of colours.

Underwater Helmet Diving Tours
Sea Trek offers a one-hour fully guided, underwater sea tour using The Sea Trek helmet diving system. Helmets are constructed of the highest quality marine grade components and provide three times the amount of air necessary for normal breathing. Tours are conducted in shallow water utilising a consistent dive plan with a guide and safety diver. Participants must be aged eight and older, but no swimming skills are needed. For information or reservations call (345) 949 0008 or email: mail@seatrekcayman.com.

Underwater Observatories
For the less adventurous, or those with infants, Atlantis also operates the Seaworld Observatory, which never descends below the surface. Instead, guests are suspended five feet below the surface in a glass-enclosed hull. The tour visits two shipwrecks and shallow reefs where the crew puts on a fish feeding show. Residents are eligible for significant discount on presentation of a local ID. (Infants under two are free). For information and reservations call (345) 949 7700.

Nautilus Undersea Tours offers a semi-submersible that holds 88 people. They offer daily trips at 11am (one hour) and 1pm (1½ hours including snorkelling). In addition to seeing the reef, a diver will hand feed fish outside your window. On Saturdays they do special trips for residents costing CI$20 for adults and CI$5 for children.
